Pet Insurance, Just the Facts

Your furry, four-pawed companion deserves nothing but the best when it comes to healthcare. Unfortunately, healthcare can become costly, especially in an emergency situation, but that is where pet insurance can help. Most pet insurance plans allow you to choose your deductible (the amount you have to pay before they will reimburse you), annual payout amount (the total amount they will pay for in a year), and/or reimbursement percentage (the percentage of the bill which they will cover after the deductible is met) which determines your premium. They make it easy and affordable to get the best healthcare for your dog. Yet, with many pet insurance plans on the market, it can be difficult to decide which is the best. Dogs need specific types of care, such as preventative and emergency, in order for them to live healthy and active lives, so choosing the right healthcare plan requires knowing what to look for in a pet insurance plan.

What to Look for In a Pet Insurance Plan

It’s important to know exactly what to look for in pet insurance packages when shopping for the best plan for your dog. A plan that covers regular veterinary visits, genetic conditions, and emergency care is often well-equipped to fit the needs of your dog. Finding plans that cover all three can be difficult, especially when considering premium costs. Another factor to keep in mind is how to file claims with each company and the expediency with which the company handles them. The following are two of the best pet insurance plans for dogs currently on the market.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance

Dogs can enjoy a healthier and happier life if they are regularly taken to the vet for routine, preventative care checkups. Many pet insurance plans, however, do not cover preventative care. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers a coverage option (in addition to their Complete Coverage plan) that involves preventative care benefits that do not include deductibles or coinsurance amounts and the plan is effective as soon as you sign up.

ASPCA’s preventative coverage plan functions in a way that helps both you and your dog get the most out of your coverage. After your dog’s routine veterinary visit, you pay for the service as you usually would without preventative care insurance. Then, you submit a claim on their website or with their app. You then get reimbursed up to $50 for the preventative care exam without having to meet a deductible or coinsurance amount. It’s so simple to submit a claim for reimbursement with ASPCA that many dog owners do so while they’re still at the veterinary office.

This preventive care package is in addition to a Complete Coverage plan that includes treatment for accidents, illnesses, behavioral issues and hereditary conditions. ASPCA allows you to choose your deductible, annual payout limit, and reimbursement percentage in order to determine the right premium for you. The preventative coverage plan is not affected by these limits, they only apply to the care involved in the Complete Coverage plan.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance and Foundation

Since dogs may suffer from unexpected injuries or accidents, finding a plan that covers veterinary bills for emergency visits is imperative. Many plans simply cover hospitalization or specialty care, without providing coverage for unexpected occurrences such as if your dog ingests a foreign object. The dog insurance plan with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance and Foundation offers veterinary bill coverage. Healthy Paws has no caps on payouts and covers diagnostic treatment and tests as well as emergency services. Healthy Paws also covers certain alternative treatments in case you choose to take a different approach with the healthcare of your dog.

With Healthy Paws, you can use any licensed vet to treat your dog without worrying about a heavy bill at the end of the visit. Healthy Paws covers over 50% of the cost of veterinary visits and processes 99% of claims in as fast as two days. However, Healthy Paws does not cover pre-existing health conditions or preventative care.

Unlike other pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws only carries one plan, but they also have no maximum limits on payouts or per incident/annual caps. Other companies will reset their payouts or the deductible will reset each year or even per incident (meaning that with some companies if your dog gets sick, you must pay the deductible in order to receive payout; however, if they then get hurt, you must pay the deductible again). If you’re looking for a plan with no limits, the insurance offered by Healthy Paws could be best for your dog.

Invest In The Best for Your Dog

With the many pet insurance plans on the market, finding the most suitable one for your dog can be difficult. Choosing a plan that covers preventative care, emergency care, and hereditary conditions is a great start to ensuring that your dog has the best healthcare possible. While it may be difficult to find a plan that offers all three, it’s not impossible. With ASPCA, preventative care and emergency care as well as hereditary conditions are covered. With Healthy Paws, emergency care, hereditary conditions, and a host of other services are covered with no payout caps. Both plans provide important coverage for your dog, so make sure to invest in a coverage plan similar to those of ASPCA or Healthy Paws so that you can invest in a long and healthy future for your furry friend.
