How to Get Pet Insurance?

2 Mins read

Upon an internet search for “pet insurance,” you are greeted with hundreds of websites and information. How can you decipher which pet insurance plans are any good? If you are in the market for finding the overall best insurance plans that will keep your furry friend protected, healthy, and well for a long time, then this is the article for you.

Don’t worry about taking the liberty to sift through countless websites searching for the best pet insurance, we’ve already done the work for you! When searching for pet insurance, it’s like searching for your own insurance because we understand how much you value your pet. With that being said, there are key differences between insurance providers that you must know before getting started.

A full list of providers includes: AKC, ASPCA, Embrace, FIGO, Hartville, Healthy Paws, Nationwide, PetFirst, PetPartners, Petplan, Pets Best, Progressive, and Trupanion.

There are many other providers but we selected only the ones we would recommend. As far as monthly rates go, pet insurance can start as low as $25.25 a month from Embrace, it can reach up to $35 for AKC, or even higher for well-known companies such as the ASPCA. In addition, pet insurance works similar to human insurance plans. Often, the cheaper the monthly payment, the higher the out of pocket costs can be year over year.

For example, studies show over the lifespan of a 13-year-old mixed breed dog, Healthy Paws, a pet insurance provider, could cost you $9,320. Whereas, ASPCA could cost you $19,447 over that same period. That’s a savings of $10,000! But at what cost?

Because, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Depending upon your situation, your best bet may be to opt for a mid-tier plan that has relatively good coverage, but stays low enough from a price standpoint. Then again, it all depends on what breed of dog, cat, or any other animal you have.

Obviously, if your pet is prone to being sick often, you’ll be better served choosing a more expensive plan because all of your runs to the vet will make the higher up front cost worth it. Yet, if your pet rarely needs to visit the vet other than an annual checkup and the breed is notorious for living long, unproblematic lives, then you’re better off getting a less costly plan.

We must remember, some insurance is better than no insurance. Ensure that your fur baby can live a long, healthy life filled with dog bones, cat toys, or anything else you want to spoil them with. By getting your pet health insurance, you lessen the risk of financial burden should anything ever happen to your precious animal. As the saying goes, it’s better to have something and not need it than need something and not have it.
